Virtual Private Network (VPN)

VPN (Virtual Private Network) technology is used to access ASU internal network. It is relevant for ASU community members who work with database subscriptions and other internal network-based services from their home computers or outside networks.

VPN setup

  1. Download OpenVPN client based on your operating system:
  2. Extract the downloaded openvpn.zip file and run openvpn-x.x.x.-install.exe.
    • Use the recommended install options.
    • A new virtual network adapter will be created after successful installation of OpenVPN.
  3. Download ASU VPN network settings:
  4. Copy ca-ad.crt and asu-ad.ovpn files from asu-ad-config.zip archive to operating system specific directory:
    • Windows XP, 7, 8, 10 32bit systems: C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\config
    • Windows 7, 8, 10  64bit systems: C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenVPN\config
  5. Download your personal key (vpn-ad.key) and certificate (vpn-ad.crt):
  6. Place your key (vpn-add.key) and certificate (vpn-ad.crt) to operating system specific directory:
    • Windows XP, 7, 8, 10 32bit systems: C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\config
    • Windows 7, 8, 10  64bit systems: C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenVPN\config

Using VPN

  1. After successful installation and configuration please run OpenVPN GUI shortcut on your computer desktop with full administrative privileges (right click, „Run as Administrator“).  OpenVPN icon will appear in system tray at the bottom right corner of the screen.
  2. Click on the OpenVPN icon and select „Connect“. Fill in  your ASU account credentials. After successfully connecting you are able to use internal ASU services and work with the subscribed databases.
  3. When finished it is important to disconnect from ASU VPN service. Click on the OpenVPN icon and select „Disconnect“.
