In 2016 Lithuania has ratified the convention of European forest institute (8th of December 2016 order Nr. XIII-70, valid from April 1st 2017). In the coming days Aleksandras Stulginskis university (ASU) became full member of European Forest institute (EFI) also our university got the possibility to be involved in all EFI networks.
The EFI Office in Bonn, that was opened in September 2017, which declared the forest resilience as the main research aim, launched the Project SURE. The latest EFI initiative ‘SURE project – Sustaining and Enhancing Resilience of European Forests’ supported by the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL). SURE has the main objective of ‘enhancing forest resilience and addressing disturbance related risks as an integral part of sustainable forest management through facilitating a set of networking, learning and capacity building interactions between science, policy and practice.
Project’s sure kick off meeting was organized in 18-21st of February, 2018 in Pisek. The researcher Edgaras Linkevičius, representing Institute of Forest Management and Wood Science, Faculty of Forestry and Ecology) participated in this meeting. Our colleagues from Czech Republic did a great job in promoting SURE network and the main topics of interest.
Firstly it is worth to mention the topic that was related with Pro Silva network and close to nature forest management. Close to nature forest management is highly associated with the natural regeneration of trees, for example beech. Conversion of pure spruce stands to the mixed spruce beech stands was discussed during the field trips.
The second topic of discussion was the wind throws and damaged trees due to very strong winds. Since the amount of strong winds and damages increased in Europe, this topic gets more and more attention.
Finally, it is worth to mention that our university has joined very valuable resilience EFI network. This will enable us to cooperate more with the best scientists in this topic, also to cooperate in coming projects.
